Korea’s employment flat as OECD nations’ rise
A key indicator of a nation’s economic health is employment. A recent OECD report found most of its member nations had their employment rates increase in the first half of the year. But Korea was not among them. And the outlook doesn’t look encouraging in the second half either, as corporate restructuring efforts heat up.
Why record surplus is not good news
Korea’s current account surplus hit a record-high in June, reaching nearly US$12.2 bil. It also extended its record surplus streak to 52 straight months. But no celebrations here as the figure was reached with both exports and imports falling, driven by a widening surplus in the goods balance.
